Akko or Acre on the Mediterranean Coast in northern Israel is a beautiful city. It was a vital port anciently and was fortified by the Crusaders and served as their last bastion in the Holy Land before they were expelled by the Turks about 1200 AD. These pictures are of the Crusader fortress, remains of their Church, etc. that have been excavated in the middle of the modern city.
There was an engraved tombstone next to where the Crusader church stood. It's hard to see in this picture, but the stone shows a crusader kneeling at the feet of a Christ-figure.
The day we visited Akko the rain poured. I loved the gutters here in the middle of the old streets. It was a beautiful contrast to the gutters that are dirty and gross. These gutters were beautiful and cleansing. They were like little waterfalls running all through town, carrying the living water from heaven to the cisterns that are everywhere in the Holy Land.
